Marion Welch

Marion Welch has been a cord blood educator and advocate since 1998 when cord blood banking was still in its infancy. Her career began as a clinical coordinator in Connecticut and New York, educating families, physicians, midwives and doulas, on the benefits and indications for cord blood stem cells. Marion was recognized for assisting more families in preserving cord blood than any of her colleagues in the United States. Part of her commitment, advocacy and drive stemmed from her father’s diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease which subsequently has affected many in her extended family. For the last 4 years, Marion has been continuing her advocacy by working with the first cord blood bank in the world, CryoCell International. Marion’s goal is to see every expectant family carry a cord blood collection kit by their side as they enter the hospital, along with their baby bag. Marion shares with Beyond Mom how her support system has helped her achieve her dreams and much more.

What makes you a Beyond Mom?

My passion for educating families on cord blood stem cells has led me to provide services to families as well as educational opportunities to the public on the option to preserve a baby’s master stem cells. I work with various groups such as doulas, childbirth educators, prenatal yoga instructors, physicians, and expecting families to bring my message of stem cell preservation to the public. Cord blood stem cells are so precious and I want to make sure families know of this important opportunity.

What are the parts of you that have grown and expanded since becoming a Mom?

I have grown so much by being a mom especially learning how to multi-task and still be effective and how to be tolerant of other views other than my own.

Can you share a collaboration/success story with another woman; what helped the collaboration become successful?

I worked with a Doula who taught me the value of female businesses especially for the community of expecting mothers. She reminded me how to be a support system for other women in business and how you have an obligation to see women succeed in business by being a role model for ethics, hard work and drive for success. Our collaboration was successful because we both believed in each other’s missions and we collaborated to bring our messages to the public in venues where we could share the platform together.

What relationships help you stay connected to yourself?

My two sons and daughter continue to encourage me to reach for the stars. They have supported my efforts in bringing awareness in stem cells and cord blood banking by educating their own friends and colleagues. My grown children 28, 25 and 21, have been by my side through this journey. They know what I do is benefitting society and their grandfather (a World War II veteran) who has endured Parkinson’s disease for 20 years. My children are supporting stem cell medicine because they have grown up with a disabled grandparent.

My husband has helped with our children as I travelled and spent evenings at educational seminars. You have to have a strong support system to achieve all you dream of.

Do you have a ‘Beyond’ dream that you are pursuing?

My Beyond dream is that every expecting parent has a cord blood collection kit at the time of their delivery. There is no cost to have a kit with you at time of delivery. The cells in cord blood and cord tissue could save a life in the family and to capture them at the time of birth is priceless.

What wellness activity can you not live without? What is one thing you do daily that balances you?

The daily activity that balances me is starting my day with a healthy breakfast. It give me energy and mental focus to keep up with a vigorous day.

How does style influence the way you stay feeling ‘Beyond’? Who is currently your favorite designer?

My style is very important to keeping me a Beyond Mom. I prefer dresses or suits for work as I feel that I am putting my best forward and showing respect for the importance of my work and those that I work with. My favorite designer is Michael Kors. His clothes are classic and elegant!

Favorite Spots that Embody The Beyond Mom:

My favorite spots in New York are the wonderful museums including some smaller ones such as the Gagosian Gallery and Neue Gallery. I try to go to a museum or gallery once a month. Art is very important to me because it is the expression of the human soul.

Beyond Cocktails and/or Food:

My Beyond food is ramen and the best in New York is Naruto Ramen. It is made right in front of you and is so nourishing.

Beyond Workout:

My Beyond workout is walking the streets of New York. I love the energy and the sights and I walk at a quick pace to burn calories. The best workout there is.

Beyond Shopping:

My beyond shopping is Lord and Taylor. I can always find something and such a great selection and sales.
